Choosing the Right Flooring for Your Hawaiʻi Home

Flooring is one of the biggest decisions in any remodel — and in Hawaiʻi, our humidity, salt air, and indoor-outdoor living make some options far smarter than others. Here's a plain-English guide.

The main types — and how they hold up here:

  • Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP/LVT) — the Hawaiʻi favorite. Waterproof, durable, looks like real wood, and shrugs off humidity and the occasional spill or leak. Great value, mid-range price.
  • Porcelain & ceramic tile — extremely durable and 100% waterproof, stays cool underfoot (perfect for the tropics), and comes in beautiful wood- and stone-look styles. Mid-to-premium.
  • Engineered hardwood — real wood on top with a layered core that's far more stable than solid wood in humidity. A great middle ground if you want genuine wood.
  • Natural stone (travertine, marble) — luxurious and timeless; premium price, and it needs sealing and care.
  • Solid hardwood — gorgeous, but in our humidity (especially near the coast) it can cup or warp; best in drier, controlled interiors.
  • Carpet — soft and inexpensive, but it holds moisture and isn't ideal for damp or coastal areas.
  • Laminate — budget-friendly wood look, but lower-quality laminate can swell with moisture — choose water-resistant products.

Cheap vs. premium — what you're really paying for:

Budget options (basic carpet, sheet vinyl, low-end laminate) cost less upfront but wear faster and can struggle in our climate. Premium options (porcelain tile, premium LVP, engineered or solid hardwood, stone) cost more but last longer, look better, and add real home value. For most Hawaiʻi homes, the sweet spot is premium LVP or porcelain tile — durable, waterproof, beautiful, and built for our environment.

What to weigh for your home:

  • Moisture & humidity — kitchens, baths, ground floors, and coastal homes favor waterproof options (LVP, tile).
  • Lifestyle — kids, pets, sandy feet from the beach? Go durable and easy-clean.
  • Look & resale — wood-look LVP and large-format tile are both on-trend and broadly appealing.
